McCoole’s at the Historic Red Lion Inn is a historic tavern with an eclectic and posh menu nestled in a cozy atmosphere.
Anything to look for this summer? 93-year-old Reta Bieber—who doesn’t use sheet music and happily takes requests—will hold down the dining room piano on Saturday nights while local bands serenade outdoor diners on the weekends.
What do regulars eat? Regulars dive for the Twin Broiled Crab Cakes, the restaurant’s signature stacks of succulent lump crab without any filler, served with a zesty housemade roasted red pepper aioli.
What’s there I can’t get anywhere else? McCoole’s reopened the next door theatre as the Arts & Events Place, an ideal post-dinner destination with plays, musicals, and concerts. And, the space functions as a super-sized event center with two unique banquet rooms and a black box theatre suited for weddings, corporate meetings, and other gatherings.
What are we drinking? The food is homemade, but so are the refreshments. Red Lion Brewery is a small-batch, hand-crafted beer endeavor that flows from four taps at the bar. A crisp IPA and citrus ale are mainstays, and two rotating selections offer a seasonally-inspired taste of the brewmaster’s creativity.
What’s McCoole’s best-kept secret? The building, which opened in 1750, allegedly hosts friendly and mischievous ghosts that are known for tinkering with electronics and even servers’ trays. While interactions with them aren’t guaranteed, they add a unique degree of whimsy to visits at this historic spot.
