Yianni's Baklava

  • 1 box phyllo, defrosted
  • 1 lb. unsalted butter, melted
  • 4 cups chopped walnuts
  • 5 tsp. cinnamon
  • 4 cups honey or 4 cups simple syrup


Layer 6 sheets phyllo on the bottom of a 9-x-12 baking pan, brushing each sheet lightly with melted butter. Sprinkle half of the walnuts and cinnamon evenly over pan. Layer 4 more sheets phyllo in pan, again brushing each with butter. Sprinkle remaining walnuts and cinnamon evenly over the top. Place the remaining phyllo sheets, buttered, on top. Bake at 350°F for one hour. As soon as the pan comes out of the oven, pour either 4 cups honey or 4 cups simple syrup (optionally infused with cinnamon), over the pan, covering entirely. Allow to rest 15 minutes before cutting into triangles and serving.
