The Scene
January 2014 marks an exciting new chapter in Youell’s 100-plus year legacy – just a year after the restaurant was destroyed by fire. The new place features additional seating in the two dining rooms that frame the expanded pub, plus a mezzanine level for lofty dining views. The décor is comfortably rustic, the atmosphere inviting, and devoted fans are hungry to build new memories.
The Cuisine
A reputation for fine, fresh seafood made Youell’s legendary. Core menu classics – Maryland crab cakes, soft shell crabs and freshly shucked shellfish – are now supplemented with a selection of sharable small-plate dishes and gastro-pub fare that feeds contemporary tastes. There’s an emphasis on craft beers and stylish cocktails; Wines by the glass or bottle fill a solid list.
Q&A with Christian Filipos, owner
Does your rebuilt restaurant still have a rooftop apiary?
A week after the fire I was rummaging through the rubble and discovered two colonies of bees clustering to keep warm. One of them survived – that was the nucleus to grow new colonies that will once again be pollinating local flora.
