Feel like you’re hanging out at home—a place you can meet with your friends.
The grill is fired up and ready to deliver a culinary adventure. Traditional Beef Khebabs, made with chunks of Delmonico steak and rubbed with a suya spice blend, arrives by yam fries and a piquant house sauce. Chef/owner Kofi Armah, who was born in the U.S. but raised in Ghana, now makes his home in Bethlehem and wants to “contribute to society” by sharing the food he loves. By tweaking native Ghanaian recipes, he’s creating entrées with a broad appeal, including lamb skewers and salmon.
Expand taste horizons with cocoyam fries, made from an imported root vegetable, or the spicy fried plantains called kelewele.
SLIDE IT OFF
Redolent with garlic and ginger, these juicy Chicken Khebabs—threaded onto skewers with red bell peppers and onions—are a signature dish that should earn a lot of new fans for West African cuisine adapted to American tastes.
With sofas and ottomans arranged around low tables, the vibe is clubby and relaxed—more like a living room than a traditional dining room. In addition, cozy seating is also available in the covered arcade adjacent to the restaurant. Live music ramps up the energy level on weekend late nights, when Coal is open (and the chef still cooking!) until 3 A.M.
WHAT’S THE 411?
As a BYOB, guests may bring wine, beer, or a favorite bottle of spirits that can be blended with pitchers of house-made cocktail mixers, or just simple sodas. (A beverage menu will suggest appropriate liquor pairings, such as vodka or whiskey, for the unique drink creations.) Calabash cups, crafted from gourds, contribute to the deliciously intercultural experience. Check social media for upcoming special events at Coal.
Looking to host a private soiree? The entire venue can be booked for celebrations.
