theMOOD As a haven of hospitality at an historic crossroads since 1756, “The George” offers a respite from the speed of the electronic age and an escape from the pressures of modern business life. An official National Historic Site, the handsome stone inn is imbued with authentic character: If the walls could talk, tales of Revolutionary War Minutemen and guests such as John and Samuel Adams would be whispered. (There’s also a purported ghost or two.) With six dining rooms on three levels, a trio of antique bars, two fireplaces and a snugly sheltered seasonal outdoor dining porch, the inn provides a variety of charming settings for an evening out or for private functions.

theDISH A changing seasonal menu encompasses classic American and Continental fare, with premium Angus steaks, veal and chicken dishes, and an excellent selection of fresh seafood preparations. Several half-portion entrees are available for lighter appetites, and the menu also offers burgers, salads, and homemade soups.

theGLASS A “Reboot & Recover” happy hour Tuesday through Friday features reduced price beverages and appetizer specials. An ample wine list is available by the bottle or glass, and cocktails run the gamut from spirited coffees to signature “commemorative martinis.” including the Miracle on the Hudson, dedicated to Captain Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger III, and a delicate pink Princess Diana.

theINSIDE SCOOP The Inn is famed for its themed parties from St. Patrick’s Day to Charles Dickens Christmas Eve dinners. A costumed 100th Anniversary “Last Dinner Served” aboard 1st Class, HMS Titanic event brings Victorian elegance, sumptuous food and live entertainment to the Inn in April. As the late Jack Palance once said, “You guys have a hell of a place here.”
