  • “McCoole’s has had several different missions over the years,” says owner Jan Hench. “It opened as a tavern in 1750 during the Revolutionary War and became a secret meeting place for rebels during the 1799 tax revolt. Today, we’re here to provide a fine dining experience for a casual dining budget.”
  • The historic tavern is host to home-cooked meals, community gatherings, and even the paranormal. (Yes, really.) Ghosts have been routinely spotted throughout the restaurant, orbs have appeared in pictures, and rumor has it that a playful ghost with a love of shiny things dwells in the ladies’ room.
  • Warm up this winter with comforting appetizers like this Eggplant Rollatini, stuffed with a savory potpourri of smoked Gouda, mozzarella, and spinach.
  • Here’s how to make Rainbow Trout truly divine. Step 1: Stuff it with your legendary jumbo lump crab cake mixture. Step 2: Pan sear it until the skin is crispy. Step 3: Wrap it in bacon. Luckily, McCoole’s did all of the legwork – all you have to do is dig in.
  • Pull up a stool in the charming and beautifully restored taproom for a spirited celebration over a glass of wine, specialty cocktail, or pint of one of McCoole’s very own beers from the Red Lion Brewery, which focuses on small-batch, hand-crafted brews.
